This week it seemed like every day I heard a twofer. Monday it Led Zeppelin Heartbreaker/Livin Lovin Maid . Tuesday I heard a group my dad loved, The Fifth Dimension doing Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In and driving home that night I heard The Beatles doing Sgt Pepper Reprise/A Day in the Life Of course Sgt Pepper, arguably the best album of all time also begins with a twofer. This morning brought another example. I spent my growing up in Houston, and became a big fan of that old band from Texas ZZ Top and going into the office this morning heard Waiting for the Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago
But I to highlight The Guess Who's No Tonight/New Mother Nature as it's always been a favorite. It's the only one I can think of that finishes with the lyics of both songs ...

(Lonely feeling) Jocko says "Yes" and I believe him
(Deep inside) When we talk about the things I say
(Find a corner) She hasn't got the faith or the guts to leave him
(Where I can hide) When they're standing in each other's way
(Silent footsteps) You're tripping back now to places you've been to
(Crowding me) You wonder what you're gonna find
(Sudden darkness) You know you've been wrong and it won't be long
(But I can see) Before you leave 'em all far behind

What's your favorite twofer?

Random Lyric of the Week - Songs about making songs

I've loved music for as long as I can remember. Although I love a hard rocking drum or guitar solo (listening to Zeppelin as I write) it's the lyrics that make songs memorable for me. Maybe that's why I have an affinity for songs about the music industy. Cynical songs that criticize both the industry and pop music. Songs like The Entertainer, Working for the MCA, Have A Cigar, Don't Us We'll You or So You Want to be a Rock and Roll Star.
This week I want to highlight Blues Traveler 1994 song Hook It's a satirical take on the meaningless lyrics of pop music and lets you know it from the opening lines........

It doesn't matter what I say
So long as I sing with inflection
That makes you feel I'll convey
Some inner truth or vast reflection
But I've said nothing so far
And I can keep it up for as long as it takes...

If you're not familiar with this song, or you only know "The Hook" I highly recomend doing this one with the lyrics. At 4:26 it's a bit longer than ..catchy little tunes of hip 3 minute ditties... but well worth the time.

Not so random lyric of the week - Hair

After two and a half years my hair is finally long enough donate and next Tuesday it's all coming off! In celebration, I'm going look at a few "Hair" songs. 1979 saw the theatrical release of the anti Vietnam War musical Hair. The title track is 60's counter culture and even uses the openign music The Star Spangled Banner this verse...

Oh say can you see my eyes
If you can than my hair's too short!

Another favorite is George Thorogood & the Destroyers Get a Haircut . The singer is being told to give up his music, cut his hair & get a real job. Being schizophrenic uhm I mean a Gemini, I find I'm both the singer...
I was a rebel since the day I left school I didn't wait until I left school, as I was listening to George Carlin & Cheech & Chong and a lifelong questioner of authority (the nuns loved me). However considering I've been the Comptroller at my current company years, i definitely Got a Real Job

Last we're going back 1970 and the first "Super Group" Crosby Stills Nash and . Unlike most of their songs this song has no harmonies, just David Crosby singing.

Almost cut my hair
it happened just the other day
it was getting kind of long
could of said it was in my way
but I didn't and I wonder why
I feel like letting my freak flag fly
and I feel like I owe it someone

If anyone is interested in donating their hair, may I recommend
With Hair Loss
They accept grey hair and don't the families the wigs.

are a surprising of songs that I could chosen for this week. are the obvious popular songs like Billy Joel's "Captain Jack" , The Devinyls "I Touch Myself" , ARS "Imaginary Lover" or Alice Cooper's "Muscle of Love". 's no doubt about what these folk are singing about. Then are songs a less obvious. Cyndi Lauper's "She Bop", Jackson Brown's "Rosie" and Elvis Costello's "Pump Up" aren't as obvious, but the meaning's the . But I decided go way back for this 1952 ditty by David Bartholemew that was covered and made famous by the great Chuck Berry in 1972... My Ding a Ling . It's ostensibly about a 's toy, but the verses are full of double entendres. When singing it live, he always had the audience sing along and would dedicate the last verse to "those will not sing"....

...those of you will not sing
you must be playin with your own Ding a Ling

Of course that doesn't mean you can't sing while "Rosie" is doing her thing!

Random lyric of the week - Halloween Rocky Horror part 2

I listened the soundtrack last night, the first time in probably years trying pick just one line...I settled three....

The Sword of Damacles FrankenFurter's monster aka Rocky had the body of a David and sings of Cicero's moral tale of power. Rocky is the antithesis of the usual monster and I can't help but compare him Peter Doyle's tap dancing monster in Frankenstein.

The Sword of Damocles is hanging over my head
And I've got the feeling someone's gonna be cutting the thread

Touch-A Touch-A Touch-A Touch Me As a year , this was my favorite part of the movie and the lyric sung by a Susan Sarandon tearing pieces off her half slip and bandaging Rocky needs no explanations...

Then if anything grows while you pose
I'll oil you up and rub you down
And that's just one fraction of the main attraction
You need a friendly hand and I need action...

As an adult, Rose Tint My World is my favorite. All of the main characters a part and I could take a line from every one of their performances, but I finish with Tim Curry. I was going take something from Sweet Transvestite but decided instead highlight this lament, a desire probably felt by every cross dresser tv ever lived...

What ever happened Fay Wray
That delicate satin draped frame
As clung her thigh
How I started cry
cause I wanted be dressed just the .

Happy Halloween Everyone!

I think I'm going to hit a song every night from now to Halloween. Although there are lots of good halloween novelty songs not to mention Warren Zevon's Warewolves of London, I've been a huge fan of The Rocky Horror Picture Show since I first experienced it in '76. I love parodies, sci-fi movies and musicals! For those who never experienced a midnight showing back when such things were allowed, a large percent of the audience brought props to mimic what was going on in the flick. I usually brought the following...
Rice
Spray bottle of water
Newspaper
Lighter
Roll of (Scott) TP
Toast
Playing Cards

I'm going to start with the second song Dammit,Janet. Unfortunately, I'm a graduate of the Brad Major's school of dating which explains my success with the ladies. There've been hundreds of romantic refrains written through the years, but I ask you ladies, can any compare with...

Dammit, Janet I Love You!

After sampling The Beatles last week, seems fair cover the opposite end of the spectrum this week....One Wonders. As much as I like the songs, I left foreign groups like Zagar & Evans, Dexy's Midnight Runners & Focus out as I don't know how they did in their home countries. I considered doing "? and the Mysterians" song 96Tears for their alone, but decided go with a song more apropos for this site. While Americans were celebrating our 200th birthday, Starlight Vocal Band had the one song in America... Afternoon Delight

Thinking of you's working up my appetite
Looking forward a afternoon delight
Rubbing sticks & stones together make the sparks ignite
and the thought of rubbing you is getting so exciting

I've always wondered how a group can a one , never be heard from again! Bonus points anyone can another one of their songs without looking it up.

The best band ever, I could do a random Beatles lyric every day for a year! Those of us were listening back then remember the great Beatles conspiracy, that Paul was killed in a car crash and secretly replaced. This week's song I am the Walrus was one often cited for containing clues. Although many Beatles songs contained social commentary and messages, others were nothing but word salad like this....

Elementary penguin singing Hare Krishna
Man, you should seen them kicking Edgar Allen Poe

The White Album's Glass Onion has John telling the listener...
Well here's another clue for you all, the walrus was Paul
're a lot of other "clues" from Beatle's songs and album covers used as evidence for this bizarre theory.

This week I wanted highlight a member of the 27 Club. 's a surprising long list of muscians have the dubious distinction of dying at the age of 27, most of whom OD'd . I've always loved Janice Joplin's music, the energy and passion she puts into her songs was and continues to be IMO unmatched. I've decided to take a line from the last song she ever recorded, just a few days before her death; Mecedes Benz . For those who don't know , 's a light ditty unlike her usual fare. Knowing her f her carefree laugh at the end never fails move .

Lord won't you buy me a color TV? Dialing for Dollars is trying to find me .

I'm guessing aren't many remember Dialing for Dollars.
I considered another member of the 27 Club for this week, Jim Morrison. The problem with The Doors is winnowing the list down one line.

This week I want to highlight the funky New Orleans Blues of Dr. John & his biggest commercial success which peaked at #9... "Right Place Wrong Time". I loved growing up with the music of the 70's when you could hear the likes of Led Zepplin, The Carpenters, Motown, Chicago, Stevie Wonder and funk like this all on the same station.
This song had a couple of options, and although being a of the '60's I've certainly experienced my share of " Refried Confusion " I decided to go with the line Emerson Lake & Palmer liked so much they stole it for an album title....

Just need a little BRAIN SALAD SURGERY got to cure this insecurity

If you've never heard Dr. John, it's definitely worth a listen!

Each week I'll pick a lyric I find evocative, inspiring or just wierd....

Today I've chosen the Dire Straits 1982 statement on the decline of British manufacturing
Industrial Disease with a simple yet obvious logical conclusion:

"Two men say they're Jesus, one of them must be wrong."

Such a simple line, but I've always loved it!

Being both a Zeppelin and Tolkien fan since the early 70's I've enjoyed the many Lord of the Rings references in their songs. This week I've chosen their 1969 banger Ramble On.

Twas in the darkest depths of Mordor I met a girl so fair, but Gollum and the evil one crept up and slipped away with her.

Any other Tolkien fans out there with their own favorite?

Each week I'll pick a lyric I find evocative, inspiring or just wierd. This week's is from Meatloaf's Two Out of Three Ain't Bad...

You've been cold to me so long I'm crying icicles instead of tears

That song has a few good lines, and I almost picked...
There ain't no Coupe D'Ville hiding at the bottom of a Cracker Jack box

If you've never listened to Meatloaf or it's been a while, I recomend listening to the Bat Out of Hell album. You won't be sorry.
What's your favorite Meatloaf line?
