Who Am I

Half Writing.

I grew up with Sci FI in the 70's and 80's, shows like Star Trek, Space 1999, Blake's 7, Star Blazers, and Battle of the Planets. I loved them and more, they showed there was much larger world out there filled with wonder. It opened up new and exciting ideas. Then Nov. 4, 1979, rolled around and the larger real world decided to make it's self known to , a group of college students belonging to the Muslim Student Followers of the Imam who supported the Iranian Revolution, took over the U.S. Embassy in Tehran&. Two worlds collided, my childhood and the real world. Helped to order them, shape them, and to understand them. Gene Roddenberry had this to say about my loved

Sci Fi:

“For science fiction is a way of thinking, a way of logic that bypasses a lot of nonsense. It allows people to look directly at important subjects.”

For Gene's words ring true. The Sci Fi I loved so much was there for . It helped to start to understand the the events that were taking place in the real world around and how I related to them.

In the years to follow it would not just be Sci Fi that helped shape my world. Another cartoon came back into my life via my girlfriend, Dudley Do-Right. I liked the cartoon, it was funny and all, all about how Snidely Whiplash, Canadian Mountie Dudley Do-Right's nemesis, tying Nell Fenwick to rail road tracks or placing her in some sort of peril so that Dudley Do-Right would have to save her. I never got why my girlfriend really liked the cartoon so much. That realization came one Saturday when I was helper her dad work on his car. I came in the house to use the bathroom and caught my girlfriend masterbating to Nell Fenwick being tied to the tracks by Snidely Whiplash. After talking with her about it and a few trips to the library for books about knots our after school activities then included bondage.

Fast forward to the late 90's and I found myself transitioning from military service to the civilian world. It was rather tough of a transition for me. I seemed to no longer know who I was or what my purpose was. The work I was doing the bills and gave something to do but that was it. When not at work I tried and did everything I could to find myself again. A friend at work recommended a Sci Fi TV series, Babylon 5 to me to watch, that it was right up my alley. She was right, with it's sweeping story line, aliens, conflict, and tech, it certainly light me up. As I watched the show Gene's words came back to me and I let the thoughts and ideas of Babylon 5 work there magic on me and just like in Nov. 1979, Sci Fi helped me to start to understand the the events that were taking place in the real world around me and how I related to them. I found myself again, made a huge career change again. Because of all of this I am who I am today and where I am suppose to be.

“Let us think the unthinkable, let us do the undoable, let us prepare to grapple with the ineffable itself, and see if we may not eff it after all.”

-- Douglas Adams

Douglas words ring true for me when I think of the importance of Sci Fi and a bit of Fantasy has been in my life. It has given me tools to understand myself, the world around me, and how to interact with it all. In fact one of those tools I still use to this day comes from Babylon 5. It is the five core questions that each of the five main races hold at the center of their beliefs:

 • The Vorlon question: Who are you?

 • The Shadow question: What do you want?

 • The Centauri/Narn question: Where did you come from?

 • The Minbari question: Why are you here?

 • The Human question: Where are you going?

 • I encourage you to think long, hard, and truthfully about these questions.
