Gun buybacks

Read about what Australia did to cut down on gun deaths. They banned some guns and bought back many others. What happened? Gun deaths dramatically decreased.

The most frequent death from guns is suicide. So fewer guns means fewer dead from suicide. In the US about 20,000 of the 30,000 gun deaths are suicide each year. Another 10,000 are accidental deaths. How many are killed by self defense against a robber or assault? Very few.

Even trained police or military frequently miss the target, shoot bystanders or hit themselves or other law enforcement. The odds of just shooting the bad guys in a chaotic situation, under stress and without much training is very low.

Fewer guns means fewer gun deaths and injuries.

Yes, you can kill with a knife or bare hands, but it is a lot of work and takes time. Time for other victims to run away and call the cops.

I was in Western Oz in 2007 and by then the dust had settled and they realized that it was a good thing.
Maybe we can convince people to stop being ammo-sexuals.

Just because we have a right to die, does not mean we should exercise that right.

We have not tried a gun buyback on a massive level. I think it would work to reduce the number of guns over time.

As for the American love affair with guns there are many reasons. We idolize the wild West and many romanticize outlaws and bank robbers such a Bonnie and Clyde. Many have the fantasy that guns are needed for self defense. Others like to hunt. Some love the thrill and power of shooting at a gun range as in the movie American Beauty. Guns are powerful and attractive weapons. Guns are quite good at their jobs, death and destruction makers.

The problem is that people reject all rational reasons to reduce the number of guns as they crave the power and fantasy offered by guns. Only once touched by tragedy will people see the light and reason. Even then many will justify guns to be in with the in crowd of right wing conservatives.

How much would they pay for each gun?
